Caviar Limes: Natural Skincare Superstar and Ingredient for a Healthier Planet

When it comes to skincare, there are, quite literally, thousands upon thousands of ingredients to choose from. Yet, we often see the same ingredients making the rounds in product after product. Of course, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! But there are good reasons to opt for the lesser-known ingredients as well, even if they resemble other more common ones. For Poéthique, one such natural skincare ingredient is the mysterious caviar lime.

Also known as finger limes and citrus caviar, the caviar lime is as decadent as it sounds. Slightly finger-shaped (but really, it’s more like half a finger), once cut open, what looks like crystalized fish roe—caviar!—oozes out with the slightest touch. These little citrus balls are the pulp you’d find in traditional limes, but this citrus native to Australia is as unique as the other beautiful mysteries of the continent (Hello, platypus).

The caviar lime’s beauty and flavor are, of course, the perfect additions to a bevvy of recipes, bursting with the tart flavor of lime. (Think piling it atop avocado toast, hummus, sushi, salads, even desserts.)

But the caviar lime’s decadence is not limited to the table. In fact, it’s a hero ingredient in Poéthique’s Radiance Boosting Serum. We love it as a natural skincare ingredient because the caviar lime (scientifically known as Citrus australasica), like its other, better-known citrus cousins, is a healthy source of vitamin C, which is a highly desired skincare nutrient for its antioxidant properties.

Vitamin C works to increase collagen synthesis, which is vital to healthy skin. It may help to speed healing and prevent damage to the skin (think UV rays).

The Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University notes that there may be even more benefits to topical applications of vitamin C, but with limited research, its full benefits to the skin aren’t yet fully understood.

Caviar limes are also abundant in vitamin E, one of the most valued antioxidants that can protect–and may help to heal–skin from free-radical damage.

Aside from its stellar nutrition profile, we also opt for caviar limes instead of traditional lime because it helps to promote crop biodiversity. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations notes that while about 7,000 species of plants have been cultivated throughout human history, we now rely on just a mere handful for the majority of our food, fuel, fiber, and personal care needs.

“The loss of these resources or a lack of adequate linkages between conservation and their use poses a severe threat,” notes the FAO. “The potential of plant genetic resources for food security, sustainable livelihoods, adequate nutrition and adaptation to climate change is enormous, if managed in a sustainable manner.”

So, yes, a caviar lime sounds decadent, but when it comes to plant biodiversity and effective natural skincare, it’s as much of a pillar as any other ingredient. Maybe even more so!
