How To Take Care Of Your Skin At The Beach: Natural Sunscreen & More

Use natural sunscreen: mineral SPF

SPF is key to protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays but many are formulated with chemical filters that work by absorbing UV radiation. While they do protect the skin from UV radiation, there is some concern that the free radicals left behind in the skin, when the chemicals break down after absorbing UV rays could actually damage skin. Mineral sunscreens on the other hand, physically block the sun’s rays using zinc or titanium oxide. It’s the clean version of sunscreen without the chemicals that could wreak havoc on your body. For a full rundown of other harmful chemicals that are commonly found in skincare, check out this post. Pro tip: don’t get fooled by “mineral-based” sunscreens – it’s code for mixed with chemical sunscreens.

Cover up

Another smart and chemical-free way to keep yourself protected from the sun? Cover that skin up. Depending on how long you’ll be at the beach, you may want to bring a hat or umbrella to protect yourself from overexposure. The sun is strongest from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm so if you’re going out between those hours, try limiting your exposure to one or two hours at a time to avoid any potential skin damage. Throw on a hat, grab a cover-up or pop up an umbrella in the sand – whatever will keep you comfy, cool and protected.

Stay hydrated from the inside out

Hydration starts from the inside out so make sure to pack a large reusable water bottle (at least a liter if you can fit it in!) to sip throughout the day. It’s very important to hydrate when you’re out in the sun, especially if you’re getting active, playing a sport or swimming. Pack your favorite nutrient-dense facial spray to use throughout the day as well. It will keep your delicate facial skin hydrated and infused with nutrients.

Rinse off

After a long day in the salty waves and gritty sand, there’s nothing better than a post-beach shower. Washing away the day to reveal glowing sun-kissed skin is definitely one of life’s simple pleasures. It’s also essential to rinse off all the sand and salt that could irritate your skin later. Try using a moisturizing body wash with aloe, oatmeal or almond to soothe sunburned skin.

Moisturize

The drying effects of the sun and salt call for a major dose of moisture. Use a light cream or hydrating serum (such as the one from Poéthique on your face followed by a facial oil to lock in the benefits. Poéthique’s facial elixir is perfect after a long day in the sun – with sandalwood, rosehip, and tamanu oil to help soothe and nourish dry skin. When you’ve finished applying your facial products, move onto your body with a thicker lotion to help lock in your tan and prevent peeling.

Enjoy the beach!
