Cleansing is the foundation of any good skincare routine. It works to keep skin fresh, glowing and healthy while clearing pores to allow deeper absorption of nutrient-rich products such as moisturizers, serums, and masks.



Cleansing clears your pores of impurities such as pollution, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Without it pores get clogged leading to breakouts, dryness and dull tone. But beware of harsh cleansers that strip your skin of essential lipids and make it tight and, dry. Cleansed skin should feel fresh yet supple.

Primes for Treatment and Hydration

By removing impurities, dirt, and excess makeup, you clear the way for treatment products to penetrate into the deeper layers of your skin. A freshly cleansed face, treated with a nutrient-dense serum or moisturizer, helps to restore hydration and prevents moisture loss at night.


  1. Remove your makeup. Always do this before cleansing using an oil-based cream, wipe, or cleansing oil.
  2. Wet your face with lukewarm water and use your fingertips to apply cleanser. Make sure it’s gentle and free of alcohol and abrasive ingredients.
  3. Gently massage the product into your skin in a circular motion, along with vertical motion along the sides of the nose. Resist the temptation to scrub because scrubbing can irritate your skin.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft towel.

The frequency of cleansing depends on your skin type and daily routine. If you have oilier skin you’ll want to cleanse once in the morning when you wake up or shower and once at night before bed. If you have dry skin you might want to opt for only once in the evening. Perspiration can irritate your skin. So, after a sweaty workout session or in humid weather, or perspiration due to wearing a hat or helmet, make sure to cleanse as soon as possible after sweating.

Experiment until you find the regime that is right for you and your skin.


  • Avoid surfactant ingredients like Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, and Ammonium Laureth Sulfate. These harsh ingredients are found in many cleansers and can strip your skin of its natural oils leaving it feeling tight, dull and dehydrated.
  • The American Academy of Dermatology also recommends avoiding alcohol in cleansing products because it can be abrasive to your skin. Instead opt for natural, plant-based products with a high percentage of oils that will cleanse and soothe your skin gently.

The most important thing to remember is that you should always be using a cleanser suited to your skin type.
